Aggressive Drivers Pose a Threat to NY Motorists

|

Aggressive drivers pose an imminent danger to motorists, and people should be able to spot the signs of road rage.

Many people in New York and across the United States experience anger and impatience while driving through traffic. People get anxious when they are late to an appointment or meeting and the car surrounding them are at a standstill. Known as
aggressive driving or road rage, as many as eight out of 10 drivers admit to engaging in this dangerous practice. Although they may be a natural habit for some, aggressive driving behaviors threaten the lives of reckless drivers, as well as the lives of everyone on the road.

Reckless driving behaviors

According to AAA, there are several driving behaviors that may be considered signs of aggressive driving. These include the following:

· Switching lanes erratically and blocking other drivers.

· Speeding or racing with other vehicles.

· Failing to yield to traffic signals, stop signs and pedestrian crossings.

· Aggressive honking, using inappropriate hand gestures and yelling obscenities.

· Tailgating or following too closely.

Sadly, aggressive driving was involved in 56 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents, as reported by AAA. In some cases, road rage can turn physical. Drivers have been known to get out of their vehicles and physically attack other motorists in a fit of fury. Some vehicles have hit into other cars, sending them flying off of the road. Severe situations may involve weapons and result in serious injury or death.

What motorists should do

Drivers who witness motorists displaying these behaviors should avoid participating in an angry exchange. People should never return inappropriate gestures or words with irate motorists. In fact, it is often best to avoid eye contact altogether. New York law enforcement officers encourage drivers to call 911 if they should spot an aggressive driver that they believe poses a
danger to others safety. Officers will then be dispatched to that area. Reporting the behavior to officials may potentially save a life.
